Funds raised from the Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure® are granted to local and national programs that support Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

A minimum of $1 million from the Komen National Race net proceeds remains in the National Capital Area, including Washington, D.C. and areas of Virginia and Maryland. These funds are awarded on a needs-basis to programs in the community that support breast health and breast cancer awareness.

Funds raised from the 2007 Komen National Race for the Cure are awarded in the 2008 grant cycle. Fifteen organizations in the National Capital Area received grants for 2008 for a total investment of more than $3.3 million.

As part of the Community-Based Grant Program, grants are for a two-year period and are awarded to projects dedicated to addressing gaps and unmet needs in breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment.

Additionally, as part of the Community-Academic Partnership Grant Program, Komen may award projects three-year grants up to $700,000 for helping reduce breast cancer health disparities through partnerships between community-based organizations and academic institutions.

The remaining net proceeds support cutting-edge breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program, with a number of grantees in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland. These grants support groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world.  With these programs, Komen has been internationally recognized for its blinded, peer-review process, which has provided funding for some of the most significant breakthroughs in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment during the last 25 years.

With more than $1 billion invested to date, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s single largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to curing breast cancer – second only to the U.S. Government. We fight breast cancer on all fronts –in laboratories, in doctors’ offices, throughout communities, in rural and urban areas and at the public policy level.
